The final texture should resemble a very fine powder rather than crushed shell fragments.
A clean spice grinder or similar appliance may be used to achieve a finer consistency.
However, homemade preparation does not provide the same quality control, purity testing, or standardized calcium content available with regulated food or supplement products.
How Much Calcium Does Eggshell Powder Contain?
This is where caution becomes particularly important.
Eggshell powder is highly concentrated. A relatively small amount can contain a substantial quantity of calcium, and the exact amount varies depending on the shell and preparation.
That means using large spoonfuls simply because the ingredient is “natural” is not a good idea.
More calcium is not automatically better.
Adults have recommended calcium intakes that vary according to age, sex, diet, and individual circumstances. Importantly, that total includes calcium obtained from all foods, beverages, and supplements combined.
Someone already eating a calcium-rich diet may not need additional calcium at all.
Why Too Much Calcium Can Be a Problem
The goal should be meeting nutritional needs—not consuming as much calcium as possible.
Excessive supplemental calcium can cause problems in some people, including constipation and gastrointestinal discomfort. Certain individuals also need to be particularly cautious because of kidney problems, a history of kidney stones, abnormal blood-calcium levels, or interactions with medications.
